Winter meeting of members and supporters of Children’s Mensa – January 2016

Hana Schmidová

The participation was a reward for our children for a good term report. Our first Mensa event started with a minor adventure – as I am not a car owner, my nephew offered to take us there, and we travelled 150km instead of the expected 75km. Our not completely intentional excursion to the countryside surrounding the venue included a couple of information centres – fortunately, the kids are collectors of tourist stamps, and they did not object too much.

Once we found the venue, accommodation was without any problems. After the dinner, we played the first icebreaker game and the first visit to the pool (in all, we were in the pool twelve times during the weekend).

On the second day, I registered for a private interview with Ms. Dana Havlová. Thank you! I found out I am not alone in my troubles, and that going to school twice a week to pick up forgotten things is nothing terrible. More importantly, I realized that I am lucky with the teacher of my kids (not everyone is so lucky to have a teacher willing to agree to many things without unnecessarily stressing the children. Renata, thank you (and a big box of chocolates will follow shortly). After a great lunch and a necessary pool visit, we set out on the first trip. Instead of the snow promised to us by the meteorologists, a beautiful forest and uphill running were awaiting us. I am not really sure how all of the children managed it so well, but I am sure that we all had a great time. Our green team won! After a plentiful dinner, we met the new arrivals, and were divided into teams for Saturday’s cipher game. Our afternoon success predestined us for the green team again. From 8PM, we listened to a lecture by Dana Havlová about gifted children, while the kids played games.

Saturday afternoon was devoted to the cipher game. We had to hunt for challenges in the vicinity of the hotel, and solve them using various methods. Once again, the green team was a right choice... After lunch and a short rest, interested participants could listen to a lecture by Ing. Pavlína Boučková on memory, thanks to which everyone now remembers the 10 longest rivers in the Czech Republic. In the evening, everyone played board games. Sunday followed, with a summary of the entire weekend, and handing over presents in the form of games and sweets. After that – just packing, parting, and the journey home. It was an amazing meeting, and I hope we will be welcome again next time.
